5 mistakes to avoid when buying outdoor furniture

It’s no surprise that outdoor furniture is one of the most popular home decorating trends for this year. There are a lot of options to choose from, but it can be hard to know what will work best with your lifestyle and personal tastes. Follow these tips to help you find the perfect pieces for your patio or porch!

1. Buying furniture that is too big for your space

If you are anything like me, then you have a hard time finding furniture that is the perfect size. I live in a small apartment and every piece of furniture I buy is too big for my space. This causes me to rearrange all my living room furniture just so it will fit. It’s an annoying process and not something I want to do on a regular basis! So what can we do? There are some things we can try such as: find smaller furniture pieces, use storage ottoman or coffee table instead of sofa or chair, etc. The key thing to remember when buying new furniture is to measure your space before going shopping so you don’t regret your purchase later on!

2. Buying outdoor furniture without considering how it will look in the winter months

If you’re like me your home is decorated with all sorts of cosy indoor furniture. You have a sofa, loveseat, coffee table, end tables, and lamps. You might even have some potted plants or pictures on the walls. But what about your outdoor space? If not taken into consideration now you’ll be stuck sitting on cold stone benches for months to come!
The first thing you need to do is decide if it’s worth investing in an area rug so that at least there will be something soft to sit on outdoors when it gets cold out. This can also help give your patio or porch some additional colour by creating a patterned floor that matches the rest of your house’s interiors.

3. Choosing an uncomfortable seat, like a bench or rocker

This one is pretty self explanatory but if its not, outdoor furniture is supposed to be comfortable enough for you to sit on for long periods so best to choose something that is not going to make you want to go back inside.

4. Not choosing pieces that are made of materials that can withstand weather and wear-and-tear (like wrought iron)

Think about the clothes you wear in the summer. Do you pick pieces that are made of materials that can withstand weather and wetness? Probably not. Most of us choose items that look good and feel comfortable, without worrying too much about how well they’ll hold up against the heat, humidity, or rain. The same thing often happens when we’re choosing home furnishings and decor. We might not think about whether a particular piece is weather-proof until it’s too late, and we end up with something that’s ruined by rain or sun exposure.

5. Spending too much money on one piece of furniture when you could purchase multiple items at once to get the same effect

Look for value for money, sets are a good example of this! for the price of one sofa you could have a whole set that includes a 2 or 3 seater as well as single seaters and if you are lucky a coffee table as well. Sets are a also generally matched in colours and materials so you wont need to worry about any of the pieces looking out of place.

It’s important to invest the time and effort into making sure you select outdoor furniture that will last.
